All About Selena & Kelly

At our core, we are kind, loving, open-minded, forgiving, and silly humans who love to play outside, learn about the world around us, and learn from others. Selena is a Sconnie (from Wisconsin) and Kelly a Coloradan, but life brought us to the Seattle area where we met in 2011.  We’ve built our lives together, had so many amazing moments, and supported each other through the grief of losing loved ones. We are both nurturers who have so much love to give. We’ve been on the journey of working to grow our family since 2018 and are hopeful and excited for the day that we become parents through open adoption. The foundation of who we are at our core is who we will be as parents.

Why Adoption?

Adoption resonates deeply in our hearts. Kelly's father and maternal grandmother were both embraced into loving families through adoption. We had begun working with a fertility clinic in our early stages of trying to grow a family, but something about it didn’t feel quite right for us. Both of us separately began thinking about and researching adoption, and it felt like exactly the right option for us.

Family & Home

Home and Neighborhood:

When we saw our home, it felt like it was meant to be. We live in a small neighborhood just outside of Seattle that is full of trees. We live in between two parks that we love to visit with our dog. We enjoy filling our house with friends and family with dinners, game nights, sleepovers, music, and love. Our first home project was painting a chalkboard wall that we use as a canvas to welcome friends and family as they visit. We have amazing neighbors who feel like extensions of our family.

Community:

We have been blessed with such a supportive, loving, and compassionate friend group. They are our chosen family and have celebrated the big and small events in our lives. We have immense gratitude for their presence in our lives and eagerly anticipate welcoming our child into the warm embrace of this community.

Family:

We have strong relationships with our family.  Selena’s family lives in Wisconsin, and she visits them twice a year. They talk on the phone every day, even if it is a short conversation. Selena’s family loves to send letters in the mail, and her dad especially loves to tuck $2 bills as a surprise. Kelly’s mom lives 10 minutes down the road from us, and we enjoy spending time together going to the town center for Greek fries, spending time by the water, or playing Rummikub. While Kelly’s father has passed, Kelly’s stepmother lives in Virginia, and we are very close. She is full of Southern expressions that make us smile, unbelievably kind, and always thinks of others. We are so thankful to have become a part of each other’s families. While our family members are somewhat spread out, our connections are genuine and strong. As Kelly’s dad often said, “We may have a small family, but it is a great family.”

How others describe me

Selena is an extreme people person who loves to make up songs and be loud and silly. Kelly admires the way Selena connects with others, naturally lifting them up and making them glow by making sure that they feel heard, cared for, and appreciated. Kelly loves to learn about everything she can and enjoys answering questions about and identifying unusual birds people see or the animal tracks found while hiking. If she’s not exploring outside, Kelly loves to create in the kitchen by trying out recipes from all around the world. Selena loves that Kelly is always an optimist, finding the best in people and situations. Together, we bring out the best in each other and have a joyful, easy, down-to-earth relationship.

how we met

How We Met

We met in 2011 when Selena moved from Utah to start a job at the zoo where Kelly was working. It was one of those instant connections. We bonded over our love of animals and love of spending time in nature. Soon, we knew that the similarities didn’t stop there, and we saw that our values and interests built the foundation for a strong relationship.

Advice to Future Child

To our child, as we eagerly await the day we meet you, there are a few things we want you to always remember. First, know that you are cherished beyond measure, not just by us but by the wonderful birth family who chose us to be your moms. Embrace your unique story with pride, for it's a testament to the love that surrounds you. Secondly, embrace curiosity and diversity; the world is vast, and every person you meet has a story worth hearing. Last (but not least!) never doubt the strength within you. You are the embodiment of resilience and love, and with that, you can conquer anything life throws your way. We cannot wait to embark on this journey of life with you and we will always be here for you.

Perspectives on Open Adoption

Kelly’s father and grandmother were both adopted through closed adoptions, and both of them struggled with not knowing anything about their birth families or their origin stories. This has instilled in us a profound understanding of the importance of openness in the adoption process. We believe in the value of open adoption, as it allows our future child to have the peace that comes from knowing their origin story and maintaining vital connections with their birth family. Through nurturing relationships and the preservation of culture and traditions, our goal is to provide our child with a rich tapestry of love and identity.
