All About Kevin & Addie

We met on the Hinge app and started talking in March 2019. We were both hesitant to meet in person because we were unsure if we liked each other over text. However, our friends convinced us to meet up, and in April 2019, Kevin asked me to go miniature golfing in Del Mar, CA, because it was halfway between us. Kevin, being a golf pro, did not go easy on me and ended up winning. We joked with each other and did not stop laughing the entire game. Afterward, we had dinner at a local restaurant, The Brigantine, and talked for hours. We have been together ever since. We got engaged in Seattle in November 2020. Due to COVID, we eloped at the Laguna Beach Courthouse in California in June 2021. Our wedding ceremony was in Kauai, HI, at Addie's family's farm in July 2022. We then stayed on Kauai and had our honeymoon in Poipu.

We have 4 animals (3 cats and 1 dog). Our dog is a medium sized dog named Palmer and our cats names are Tullulah (Tula), Jax, and Odin. On April 1, 2023, we decided to pack up the animals and move to Oregon. Our relationship has been a non-stop adventure, and through all the ups and downs, we have remained constant in our love and unwavering support for each other.

About Addie:

I grew up in a happy, loving, & supportive home with my mom, JoAnna, dad, Bobby, & two siblings, Jacob & Emily. We lived in a suburban, family-oriented neighborhood in Long Beach, CA. Our house was always filled with laughter, music, dogs barking, the smells of pancakes in the morning & chocolate chip cookies on the weekends. My parents always made it a priority to walk us to school & be present at all of our events, big & small. There isn't a single game, play, award ceremony, or graduation where I don't remember my parents showing their support. My great-grandma Helen (Momo, as we called her) also lived with us, and I am grateful I got to make memories with her & other great-grandparents in our lives.

I am the oldest sibling & very close to my brother and sister. Although we would annoy each other growing up (as siblings do), we have always been supportive of one another & remain very close. I often took on the motherly role of making sure they stayed out of trouble & caring for them when they were upset. Even to this day, my siblings come to stay with me or call me during hard times.

I was always a "girly girl," loving dress-up, shopping, makeup, hair, etc. Growing up singing, I participated in multiple musicals and plays throughout middle & high school. I was never super athletic (mostly clumsy), but I was on the varsity high school swim team all four years.

I have always had a passion for supporting students with special needs. When I went to college at San Diego State University (SDSU), I studied Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Special Education. After graduating with my bachelor's in 2017, I pursued my Master's in Special Education & Teaching Credentials from Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU). I worked as a special education teacher for five years before transitioning to a Program Manager role at an education company, providing staff support to students with severe behaviors.

While I was in college, my parents bought a family farm in Kauai, HI. We now spend family holidays at the farm at least once a year. I was raised in a big surfing family, so I have spent a majority of my life finding comfort in the ocean and at the beach. My family prioritized travel and ensuring we learned to appreciate other cultures. This is something I have continued into my adulthood, traveling as often as I can.

About Kevin:

I was raised in Hawthorne, CA, near Los Angeles, by my mom, Patty, & my dad, Chris. I am the youngest of three siblings. My sister, Jennifer, is the oldest, followed by my brother, Matt. My siblings have a different dad named Robert, who has always been a part of my life, & we have a great relationship. Both of my siblings are much older than me & played a significant role in raising me into who I am today.

When I was two years old, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Growing up with this condition taught me a lot about responsibility and the importance of living a healthy life. I attended a summer camp every year where I met many friends going through the same experience. Eventually, I was able to volunteer at the camp.

As a kid, I played baseball through high school. You could also find me skateboarding around the neighborhood or at a skate park with friends. My family loved camping & would take a few trips per year. Every summer, the entire family would gather for a trip to Kern River. Some of my favorite memories are from those trips.

Growing up, my extended family all lived within an hour of each other, making me incredibly close to my cousins. To this day, we remain really close, & even their kids call me Uncle Kevin. It's always the best time when we all get together, whether it's for our holiday party, birthday parties, or family vacations. We all prioritize showing up for each other.

I started playing golf when I was a senior in high school & fell in love with it. I began working at golf courses & taking classes to obtain my PGA certification. I took a break for a year to get my bachelor's in business from Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in 2019. From there, I worked for some big golf companies like Honma & Taylormade. I eventually made my way back to golf courses & am currently working as a Golf Professional at a country club. To this day, I am a huge sports fan & try to attend as many sporting events as I can. I also love to stay active through golf, hiking, & running. I make it a point to explore new areas & spend time in nature.

Why Adoption?

Kevin: I always had this strong feeling that I wanted to be a dad. Addie always told me how much she wanted to adopt, but I never knew a ton about adoption. We started trying to get pregnant in May 2022, and when we got a positive test in November of that year, we were thrilled, but we miscarried a few weeks later. We started talking with doctors and trying everything to get pregnant naturally, meds, vitamins, diets, workouts, but nothing worked. We always knew we didn't want to do IVF, so we decided to focus on adoption instead. After some recommendations and research, we found OA&FS. After checking out an Information Session and feeling good about it, we decided to go for it.

Addie: I always knew I wanted to be a mom and I always knew I wanted to adopt. Although the media growing up did not show really any stories with open adoption, I always felt like adoption would be the route I would take to parenthood. I told Kevin very early on in our relationship that adoption was very important to me, but that I still wanted to experience pregnancy and try to get pregnant. We started trying in May of 2022. We got a positive test in November of 2022, but unfortunately miscarried a few weeks into the pregnancy. Since then, we have not been able to naturally get pregnant. We got an infertility diagnosis in April of 2023 and tried all of the medicines, vitamins, diets, workouts, etc. to try and cure the diagnosis. Nothing worked for us.  We always knew we did not want to move forward with IVF, and adoption would be the only route for us. In December 2023, we made the decision to stop the fertility treatments and move forward with open adoption. We found OA&FS through some referrals and after doing some research and joining the Information Session, we decided to move forward.

Family & Home

Our Home

We live in a small suburb with a small town feel outside the big city,  10 miles outside of Portland. We live in a 3 bed/2.5 bath house. We have a large backyard with grass, a gardening bed, & a seating area with a fire pit where we like to host & spend our summer nights. Our house backs up to a forest with a 20-mile trail that we have direct access to.

Our Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is very family-oriented, with great schools, parks, restaurants, markets, and even a yearly 4th of July parade/block party. Our cul-de-sac has a community grass area with a basketball hook, lounge chairs & garden beds. Neighborhood kids are out playing together. We are about 20 minutes from Portland's city center & we will visit often for dinner or fun city adventures.

Our Community

Addie: My current community and support systems are anchored by the unwavering love and encouragement of my family and friends. Not only are Kevin and I 100% supported by my family, but also by my in-laws, Kevin's family. Both our families extend beyond our parents and siblings. We are both incredibly close to our cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and nieces. They serve as pillars of strength, offering support and guidance through life's ups and downs. Whether it's celebrating achievements or weathering challenges, their presence brings comfort and reassurance, reminding me that I'm never alone. Alongside my family, I'm blessed with a circle of close friends who enrich my life in countless ways. My circle of friends include friends I have known since I was a young child and friends who have only entered my life recently.

Kevin: I have a couple core people that I can really give my thoughts and opinions to. I’ve never been one to have too many friends but the ones I do have are extremely close to me and will be there for me no matter the circumstances. I can call on my family as they are very close to me and I can talk with them about this whole process as well.

Family

Addie: Addie's family is spread around the world. Her parents, JoAnna & Bobby, split their time between their home in Long Beach, CA, & the family farm in Kauai, HI. Her brother, Jacob, lives in Santa Cruz, CA, with his girlfriend, Sarah & her sister, Emily, lives in Sydney, Australia. Although we are all so spread out, we prioritize traveling to see each other and having weekly family FaceTime calls. They are all ecstatic to show a new member of the family around their cities!

Kevin: Kevin's parents, Patty & Chris, live in the LA area along with his sister's family (Jen, Mario, Morgan, Dani, & our late nephew Landon). His brother, Matt, lives in Denver, Colorado with his girlfriend, Chelsea & dog Luna. We go camping 1-2 times a year & enjoy getting together for holidays & family gatherings. The entire family is excited to add another little one to the family!

How others describe me

Addie on Kevin:

Kevin is incredibly thoughtful, caring, and kind. His love extends not only to me but also to my entire family and friends, often going out of his way to show it. Once, he took my friend's car for an oil change because she didn’t want to go alone. That story always makes me laugh and reminds me of his thoughtfulness, even when it’s not expected. He also makes me laugh every day with his dad jokes and puns, brightening even my hardest days. Family is everything to him, and he'll drop everything to be there for his loved ones. I remember when his brother had an accident; he flew to Denver within hours to help him recover without a second thought. Kevin is easygoing and always up for my crazy ideas and adventures. I know he'll be the best dad and provide an amazing life for our child.

Kevin on Addie:

Addie is incredibly caring, selfless, and kind. She consistently puts others' needs before her own, ensuring those close to her are taken care of, which is something I deeply admire about her. Her love extends beyond me to her friends and family, and she shows it daily. Whether she’s checking in with her mom or reaching out to her college friends to see how they’re doing, her thoughtfulness and concern for others never cease to amaze me.

Advice to Future Child

Our hope is that the relationship we have for our child is grounded in love, understanding, trust, respect and unwavering support. We want to foster a bond built on trust and open, safe communication, where our child feels comfortable sharing their joys, fears, and dreams with us.

We hope to be a source of guidance and encouragement, nurturing their individuality and helping them navigate all of life's ups & downs.

We long to create cherished memories together, filled with laughter and adventure. We want to be a constant presence in their life, offering them a safe and nurturing environment where they can flourish and thrive into the person they are meant to be. Our child should feel empowered to explore their identity and embrace their unique journey.

We will cultivate an open and honest relationship, where communication flows freely, and our child feels valued, heard, and cherished for who they are.

Perspectives on Open Adoption

Our hopes for our relationship with our child's birth parents and birth family are grounded in respect, openness, and mutual understanding. We want to always honor the importance of their role in our child's life story.

We aspire to build a relationship based on trust and transparency, where communication is valued and open. Together, we would aim to navigate the complexities of open adoption with empathy and compassion.

Our ultimate goal is to create a supportive and inclusive family dynamic where our child feels secure in knowing they are loved not only by us but also by their birth family.

We envision a relationship that celebrates our shared commitment to the well-being and happiness of our child, allowing them to navigate their identity with confidence and pride.
